Darwin's Ark

Darwin’s Ark is a pioneering community science initiative advancing the study of canine genetics and behavior at an unprecedented scale. By combining cutting-edge genomics with direct participation from pet owners, the organization is building one of the largest open datasets dedicated to understanding how genetics, environment, and experience shape animal health and temperament. Designed to bridge rigorous research with everyday engagement, Darwin’s Ark empowers a nationwide network of dog owners to contribute meaningful data that fuels discoveries across veterinary science, public health, and comparative genomics. As the program expanded rapidly, the challenge was to translate complex scientific ambition into a brand and digital experience that felt accessible, credible, and inspiring to a broad and growing community.

Andromeda is building the first decentralized, on-chain operating system designed to simplify and accelerate blockchain development. With a modular framework and seamless multi-chain compatibility, Andromeda empowers developers to build, launch, and scale Web3 applications faster and more efficiently. Its mission is to serve as the foundational layer for the next generation of decentralized innovation.

The Challenge

While Darwin’s Ark had built a powerful platform for genomic research, its story wasn’t reaching as far as its science. The challenge was to create a brand and digital experience that could engage a broader audience, spark curiosity, and build trust. We needed to translate complex scientific ideas into something accessible and inspiring, while honoring the rigor behind the research and the real-world impact it aims to create.

Digital Strategy

Our digital strategy centered on accessibility, curiosity, and trust. We designed an experience that welcomed users into the science, not just as observers but as active participants. Clear content hierarchies, intuitive navigation, and human-centered storytelling helped make complex genomic research feel approachable. By balancing transparency with inspiration, the site encouraged deeper engagement and built lasting connections between pet owners and the scientific mission they support.

Creative Direction

The creative concept was built around the idea of shared discovery, celebrating the unique bond between people and their pets as a gateway to meaningful science. We combined a warm, optimistic tone with a visual language that felt both credible and inviting. Organic shapes, friendly typography, and real participant stories grounded the experience in humanity, while subtle data-driven cues reminded users of the science they were part of. The result was a brand that felt open, trustworthy, and genuinely collaborative.

The charts suggest breed composition or DNA results.

UX/UI

Interaction design focused on making participation feel effortless and rewarding. We simplified complex workflows into guided, user-friendly steps that invited exploration without overwhelming. Microinteractions added clarity and feedback at key moments, helping users understand their role in the research process. The experience was designed to build trust, encourage contribution, and make every action feel like a step toward discovery.

Colorful overlapping bubble chart displaying percentages for different dog breeds. Large circles in teal (37%), yellow (45%), and pink (23%) overlap with smaller circles in various colors labeled with percentages such as 21%, 15%, 12%, 10%, 17%, and 8%. Breed names including Boxer, German Shepherd, Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, Beagle, Poodle, Rottweiler, Golden Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier, and French Bulldog appear along the bottom axis.

The Results

In the first year, we helped the Darwin’s Ark team grow their community across the United States, strengthening relationships with active pet owners and is expanding efforts into Europe. Currently, there are 35,339 dogs registered and 3,666,848 responses collected and the program is expanding to working dogs, cats, and tick research to further enhance our understanding of pet health issues.

We created a responsive, user-centric website experience that facilitates seamless enrollment and ongoing engagement. The visual system was extended to packaging, advertising and various marketing materials. Social channels were established to inform the community and foster greater engagement. To increase the quantity and quality of data accessible to Darwin’s Ark, we are developing new tools for community members to record their pet’s behavior, including iPhone and Apple Watch applications for on-the-go pet tracking, data recording, and alerts.
